The Leopold Landscape Alliance becomes the proud owner of the Starker-Leopold House!

2019 was a busy year for LLA!  Thanks to everybody for your interest, support and donations.  You are what made this purchase possible.  We also want to thank the State of Iowa for our REAP grant, the Seed to the Sower Fund, Susan Flader, many smaller foundations, and our generous individual donors for their support.

In re-uniting the Compound, we also acquired the bluff land leading all the way down to the river.  The total amount of land is a little over 5 acres.

THE REAP GRANT

The Alliance was awarded a REAP Grant from the State of Iowa toward the purchase of the Starker-Leopold House! (101 Clay St.)  This was a $40,000 cash grant with $20,000 in matching funds.

REAP stands for Resource Protection and Enhancement Grant.  The funds come from the state's Environment First Fund (IA gaming receipts) and from the sales of the natural resource license plates.

Our grant is in the Historic Preservation category, administered by the State Historical Society of Iowa through the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.   We are especially proud because the state has not approved any acquisition grants in about 5 years.

Leopold Landscape Alliance sends a huge thank you to everyone involved with the REAP application, both on the writing and the approval sides of the process.  This is a big step up for us and we appreciate  the faith the State has placed in us to shepherd this project.

We received great help in the form of a letter of support from Leslie Weldon, Deputy Chief of the U.S. Forest Service.  You can read the letter here:  US Forest Service Support Letter.
